Mobile internet subscriptions to reach 8.9 billion by 2022

According to an Ericsson report, 5G networks are expected to be available in 2020, with the number of subscriptions reaching around 550 million by the end of 2020.

By the end of 2022, Ericsson predicts that there will be 8.9 billion mobile subscriptions. Mobile broadband subscriptions will reach 8 billion, thereby accounting for 90 percent of all mobile subscriptions. The number of unique mobile subscribers is estimated to reach 6.1 billion by the end of 2022.

Many PCs and tablets are currently used without a mobile subscription, one reason being the price difference between Wi-Fi only models and those with mobile capabilities. The number of fixed broadband users is at least three times the number of fixed broadband connections, due to multiple mobile devices connected to WiFi in households, enterprises and public hotspots. Whereas the number of the mobile subscriptions exceeds the number of users.

However, the number of PCs and tablets with mobile capabilities and a subscription is expected to increase 30 percent by 2022.
