How many jobs are available in technology in the US?

In May, the tech employment landscape in the US experienced mixed results. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) figures analyzed by IT industry group CompTIA, technology companies cut around 4,725 jobs, including both technical and non-technical positions. Additionally, job postings for open tech positions decreased from 300,000 in April to approximately 234,000. However, there was a positive note as the overall number of technology jobs across various sectors increased by 45,000.

April 2023

In April, the tech employment sector in the US displayed a mix of positive and negative trends. While technology companies added 18,795 workers, the highest number since August 2022, tech jobs throughout the economy saw a decline of 99,000 positions. The overall unemployment rate in the US remained steady at 3.4%, with the unemployment rate for tech occupations rising slightly to 2.3%. The strong employment gains in the tech sector were offset by a slowdown in tech hiring across other industries.

March 2023

In March, the tech sector employment in the US experienced a decline of 839 jobs, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and CompTIA. However, employer job postings for tech positions increased by 76,546, reaching a total of 316,000 openings. The tech unemployment rate remained unchanged at 2.2%. Overall, the US economy added 236,000 jobs in March, with the unemployment rate dipping to 3.5%, near historic lows.

According to the May Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) report by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the number of open jobs in the US decreased from 11.7 million in April to 11.3 million in May. However, the US added 390,000 jobs in May, with the unemployment rate holding steady at 3.6%. There were nearly two job openings for each unemployed American. The number of workers quitting their jobs remained unchanged at 4.3 million.

The tech job market remains highly competitive, with the unemployment rate for tech occupations reaching a near-record low in May. Employer job postings for tech positions surpassed 443,000. Tech firms added 75,200 workers in the first four months of the year, and more than 190,000 new IT jobs are expected to be created in 2022. Some of the top tech jobs in terms of hiring and pay include software developer/engineer, IT project manager, IT support specialist, systems engineer/architect, and network engineer/architect.
